[ The Animal's Defender ]

The Animal's Defender was a monthly publication of the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (Boston, MA), an organization founded in 1895 and still going strong today.

The December 1900 issue carried this brief note, in a section of miscellaneous observations about dogs, regarding the Newfoundland owned by the French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844 - 1923), one of the most popular actresses of her time.

Dog Dies of Grief

Mme. Bernhardt, the noted actress, lately left Paris for the steamer en route to this country, says the Globe of Nov. 18. She left behind her famous Newfoundland dog, Boubouroche, the gift of Henry Irving. The dog, which was of great size, and had saved several lives, would not be comforted after the departure of its mistress, and died of grief a few days later. Vivisectors will please notice that such an animal would have furnished splendid "material" for "experiments on the emotions."

This issue of the magazine also included this image on its cover:
