newfoundland dog statue

Newfoundland Dog Marker
date uncertain, probably 1910-1920
artist(s) unknown

This painted metal Landseer statue, in Union Cemetery in Steubenville, Ohio, serves as the grave marker of one John Boillin, a metal foundry worker who was blinded in an accident. It is recorded that a stray dog became his seeing-eye dog, and since the statue was created by some of Boillin's fellow workers at the foundry, who saw the dog with Boillin,we can safely assume the dog was a Landseer Newfoundland. For reasons I have not been able to discover, the statue is frequently decorated with a bow.

Here is a screen grab of that part of the cemetery's tour map discussing the Dog Marker:

Newfoundlands stand guard over other graves as well, including in a cemetery in Dayton, Ohio and in Richmond, Virginia.
