Newfoundland (1863 - 1902)
by
Harrison Weir

Harrison Weir (1824 - 1906) was a noted English animal illustrator who, according to his Wiki entry, is also known as "the Father of the Cat Fancy" for organizing the very first cat show in England in 1871.

This image first appeared in Our Dumb Companions, an illustrated volume of animal anecdotes by Thomas Jackson and first published in 1863. The image, slightly modified, appeared again in 1867 on the front cover of Harper's Weekly — that's the image above — and then again in The Animal World magazine in 1902 (the image below). That same year Weir painted a watercolor version, which you can see here.

The Harper's Weekly publication of this image (on its front page) accompanied that image with some Newf-related anecdotes; click here for that item here at The Cultured Newf.

Weir provided several illustrations of Newfoundlands for Our Dumb Companions, so click the "Our Dumb Companions" link above to check out more of his Newf work in that volume.
